Frequently Asked Questions
Q - I have never remodeled before. How do I get started?

A - Find a couple of remodelers that you like the quality of their work, and set-up an appointment to meet with them. During your meeting with each contractor, be thinking about how well you will be able to work with this individual. Remember this individual and his people will be in your home for the next several weeks.

Q – Do I need plans for my remodel?

A – This will depend on the project. If it is a cosmetic remodel where you will just be changes countertops, appliances, tile, or paint colors, no plans are not necessary. If however you will be adding additional square footage or rearranging an existing area, then yes plans would insure both you and the contractor or looking at the same scope of work.

Q – Who does the plans?

A – Plans can be drawn by a Designer, an Architect, or a Design/Build firm. The Design/Build firm is usually preferable in remodeling projects, because the Homeowner is working with just one company or individual through the entire project.

Q – How many estimates should I get?

A – The number of estimates you get is whatever number you’re comfortable with. Remember, each estimate you get takes your time to meet with that contractor as well as his time to meet and prepare an estimate for you. The usual is two or three.

Q – When do I need a general contractor for a project?

A – Usually when the project involves three or more trades. For example a kitchen remodel you would want a general contractor, because you’ll have five or more trades involved, however a new fence needs only one trade which you as a homeowner can hire, supervise, and pay.

Q- How long should a remodel project take?

A – That depends on the project. The more trades that are involved in a project and the larger the scope of the project, the longer the time frame to complete that project.
